Backhanded Compliment?

I took my kids to daycare this morning and my 5-year-old was kind of being a pain as we walked in the front door. Whining, saying no, etc... One of the teachers was walking out the door and said to me, "It's good to see him like that."
I said the first thing that popped into my shocked head, "huh?"
She said, he's so good all time, always saying yes ma'am, no ma'am, please & thank you it's nice to see he is actually a normal kid like the rest of ours."
I thanked her and went on my way.
I guess that was a compliment?
